Founder & Owner

Penny Smith

Penny opened Just For Fun Video Games in Edmonton, Alberta in 1993, inspired by a simple observation at home. Watching her three sons race through video games and quickly move on to the next one, she saw an opportunity to create something different—a place where people could trade and sell games they were finished with, and where others could buy quality used games at a more affordable price. What began as a practical idea soon became a cornerstone of Edmonton’s gaming community.

For nearly 35 years, Penny and her sons ran the store together, serving generations of families, collectors, and gamers. Though she didn’t start out knowing much about video games, Penny learned along the way, gaining a deep appreciation for everything from the most common titles to the rarest finds. While she wouldn’t call herself a gamer, she has been known to enjoy a round of Tetris from time to time. Penny’s philosophy has always been simple: sell products the way she would want to buy them. That means a welcoming store, clean and well-cared-for games, and friendly, helpful staff. Above all, Penny takes pride in making sure every customer feels comfortable—and excited—to come back.

Lee Tappenden

Lee has been part of Just For Fun Video Games for as long as he can remember. He grew up in the store, helping out after school, on weekends, and during school breaks, and on the occasional sick day, he could be found resting in the back when home wasn’t an option. For Lee, the family business was more than just a place of work, it was a second home and a defining part of his childhood. Growing up, life and the store were inseparable.

As the years went on, Lee naturally took on more responsibility, helping the business evolve with the times. With a strong affinity for sports games—especially the EA Sports NHL franchise—he understands gaming from a player’s perspective while also managing the behind-the-scenes work. Today, Lee oversees key areas such as accounting, staffing, and has played a major role in expanding the store into online sales. Now a parent himself, Lee’s children spend time in the store and proudly “work” alongside him, continuing the family legacy.
